If you have an FBX file with a root nodeA transform in an animation hierarchy that allows Unity to establish consistency between Animation clips for a generic model. Unity 3.5 does this because when importing animated characters, the most common setup is to have one root node with all bones below and a skeleton next to it in the hierarchy. Unity supports triangulated or Quadrangulated polygon meshes. Nurbs, Nurms, Subdiv surfaces must be converted to polygons. More info
