Note: These tools are only available in the Terrain Tools package.

Erosion moves sediments between different parts of the terrainThe landscape in your scene. A Terrain GameObject adds a large flat plane to your scene and you can use the Terrain’s Inspector window to create a detailed landscape. More info

, using one of three processes: Thermal, Wind, and Hydraulic. Each process has different effects on the terrain, and you can use them in combination to create a variety of natural-looking landscapes:

Considerations when using erosion tools Learn how to prepare your terrain for erosion, and how to use the erosion tools to create realistic landscapes.
Hydraulic erosion Sediment moves with water, changing the terrain’s shape and creating new features, such as river banks. Hydraulic erosion can carry sediment over long distances.
Thermal erosion Sediment settles according to its angle of repose, the steepest angle at which a sloping surface formed of a particular soil type is stable. Thermal erosion limits the terrain’s ability to form large formations such as cliffs and mountains, and small details within those formations. Thermal erosion doesn’t move soil far: it settles when it reaches a resting angle.
Wind erosion Sediment moves across the terrain, eroding features at the start of its path and building new features, such as dunes, at the end. Wind erosion can carry sediment over long distances.
