Manage your license
You can use the Unity Hub to view, add, and return licenses. To access the license management options:
- Open the Unity Hub, and sign in.
- Click the gear icon to open the Preferences window.
- Select Licenses.
This view shows your active licenses and displays the type of license, the activation date, and an option to Return license. To get the most recent details, select Refresh.

Activate a license for a Unity Personal plan
The Unity Personal plan uses a named user license.
Activate a named user license for Unity Personal
If you use the Unity Personal plan, sign in to the Unity Hub to automatically activate a named user license. No further action is required.
To return your named user license, sign out of the Unity Hub.
Get a free license for Unity Personal
If you don't already have a license for Unity Personal, or if the Hub didn't grant it when you signed in, follow these steps:
- Open the Preferences window > Licenses and select Add.
- Select Get a free personal license.
- Read the terms.
- Select Agree and get personal edition license.
Activate a license for other Unity Editor plans
If you use a plan other than Unity Personal, there are several methods to activate your license:
- For Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise, activate your license with a serial number.
- For Unity Industry, refer to Activate a named user license for seat-based plans. If you need to work offline beyond your grace period, you can activate your license with a serial number.
Activate with a serial number
This is an online activation method. If the computer with which you'll use the Unity Editor isn't connected to the internet, refer to Activate with a license request.
- Open the Preferences window > Licenses and select Add.
- Select Activate with a serial number.
- Enter the serial number.
- Select Activate.
Activate with a license request
Use this method if the computer with which you'll use the Unity Editor isn't connected to the internet. This method assumes you have access to two computers, as follows:
- The first computer is the one with which you'll use the Unity Editor, but the computer can’t connect to the internet.
- The second computer is any computer that can connect to the internet.
From the first computer (with which you'll use the Unity Editor):
- Open the Preferences window > Licenses and select Add.
- Select Activate with license request.
- Select Create license request to download an
.alf
request file. You'll need this file in a later step. - Transfer the
.alf
file from the previous step to a second computer that has internet access.
From the second computer:
- Go to the Upload license request portal.
- Select Browse.
- Select the
.alf
license request file you downloaded earlier. - Select Next, and follow the prompts.
- Select Download license file to download your Unity license file (
.ulf
). You'll need this.ulf
file in a later step. - Transfer the
.ulf
license file from the second computer to the first computer.
From the first computer:
- Return to the Unity Hub.
- Select License file in the Activate with license file step.
- Locate the Unity license file (
.ulf
) that you transferred earlier. - Select Activate.
Activate a named user license for seat-based plans
Before you can activate a named user license for a seat-based plan, an administrator of your organization must assign a named user license:
- If you’re part of an organization but aren't its administrator, ask the administrator to assign a seat to you.
- If you have administrator rights in the organization, go to https://id.unity.com and select Organizations > (select an organization) > Subscriptions & Services > Manage seats > Assign Seat(s).
After an administrator assigns your seat, sign in to the Unity Hub to automatically activate your license.
To return your named user license, sign out of the Unity Hub.
